Shades of Color

This project was a set of glasses that had modular, stack-able lenses that would allow the user to shape their viewing experience as they wanted.

Process Documentation

The initial prompt was to choose a demographic of children and design a toy that would teach them something. Each person came up with three ideas individually and then formed into groups of three based on interests. Two members of my group had ideas for glasses, and two had ideas for color filtering, so we came together to design a product.

We ultimately decided to make glasses with interchangeable lenses, allowing the user to learn about how color filtering effects perception of light. We initially were going to use a pin system but found them to be delicate and ultimately decided that a system of small neodymium magnets embedded into the frame and lenses would allow for easy interchange but keep the pieces together.

We modeled the Shades of Color on the sunglass shape that we collectively liked the best, and attempted to make the frame fit all shapes and sizes of faces. We laser cut the frame of the shade and many of the lens frame attachments. We press fit the magnets into their holes while making sure that their polarity was facing the right way.
