This art project was a public piece that utilized statistics about pollution in the Pittsburgh area to raise public awareness.

Process Documentation

My initial idea for this project was a singular 15 foot tall exclamation point that would be placed into the ground. After a few sketches and ideas about the overall look of the piece, I made my first mockup. I primarily utilized Adobe Illustrator.

Initial Mockup

I decided that this had too much information and was rather unengaging, so I decided to split the singular large sign into a series of smaller signs on individual topics. I decided to play with the text size to make the piece more digestible, visually engaging, and emphasize important content. After this iteration, I also added symbols to make the pieces more visually engaging.

Second iteration

I then imported the designs into Rhino and prepared them for CNC routing.

  • Painted MDF for routing
  • CNC Router in action

After routing, I cleaned up the engraving, inserted metal rods for use, and glued the corresponding sides together, one with the information and the other TOXI(CITY).

I then carried the pieces and inserted them near a public walkway with a lot of foot traffic.
