Aperynth

This piece is symbolic of viewpoint and the steps we take to get there.

Process Documentation

The prompt for this piece was to make something to hold or position a found object of your choice. Think of this as a vessel, receptacle, container, plinth, or pedestal either literally, but potentially figuratively. I chose a lensball, which is an object in of itself but can more figuratively be seen as a vessel for the world around it, capturing the images surrounding this. I decided I wanted to contextualize this with a pedestal and began sketching possible ideas.

Initial sketches

After deciding on how I wanted to build my pedestal, I began producing the blocks necessary. I cut each piece of wood to the correct size and decided to interlock them so each face of the cube would be the same size. I cut out smaller cubes where the cubes corners would interlock into eachother. I drove small nails into the edges to hold the boxes together.

After constructing each individual cube, I assembled the main body of the piece and wood glued everything together.

I then constructed a base for the main piece and a rod for the center of the platform the lensball would stand on. I spraypainted everything with several layers of black. I then assembled the rest of the piece.

After assembly, I sewed a small cushion for the lensball to sit on and attached it to the top of the pedestal.
