We Are All Immigrants

This piece is meant to be a reflection of American values, and to help people recognize that the vast majority of us are descended from immigrants to this country.

I constructed this piece during the attempted repeal of DACA in solidarity with the movement to keep the program. This piece is especially personal, as I am the son of a Hispanic immigrant. I utilized mirrored acrylic so that the viewer could see themself in the message, a potentially powerful tool for self-reflection. The message is displayed in both English and Spanish, mirror each other and emphasizing the connection between the two separate parts as one whole. The strikethrough scribble and ‘Immigrants’ sections have a pristine mirrored finish pristine. The mirrors on the ‘We Are All’ sections of the text have a duller, aged finish. This was to signify a shift in ideas, recognizing that almost everyone in America has immigrant roots and that we should celebrate that and support immigrants.
